Copyright for Crafters
Crafters are a creative lot, and we love to share ideas, patterns, and techniques. But before you photocopy that quilting book for a friend, make sure you’ve considered your Copyright obligations!
Because Copyright isn’t just for books… Copyright also applies to original handmade craft works and the designs and patterns used to create them. Copyright is automatic and applies from the time a work is created. Often, there’s an implied licence to make up a craft item when you purchase a pattern, but you may need to get permission from the Copyright owner before you reproduce a work, design or pattern.
It can be confusing trying to work out what is okay and what isn’t, but the Australian Copyright Council has a range of Information Sheets just for Craftworkers in plain English. Check them out!
