Silence can be deafening

By: | Tags: , , , , , , | Comments: 0

“Jean McClellan spends her time in almost complete silence, limited to just one hundred words a day. Any more, and a thousand volts of electricity will course through her veins. Now the new government is in power, everything has changed. But only if you’re a woman. Almost overnight, bank accounts are frozen, passports are taken away and seventy million women lose their jobs. Even more terrifyingly, young girls are no longer taught to read or write.” Vox is the debut novel by Christina Dalcher and a great book to read […]

Milkman takes the prize

By: | Tags: , , , | Comments: 0

“A novel that is at once unlocated and profoundly tethered to place is surely a novel for our times.” Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness; a story of inaction with enormous consequences and decisions that are never made, but for which people are judged and punished. It is the 2018 winner of the Man Booker prize.  Set in a society divided against itself, Milkman explores the insidious forms oppression can take in everyday life. Middle sister is the protagonist and we follow her as she navigates her way through […]

“The Best Book I’ve ever Read!”

By: | Tags: , , | Comments: 0

In the library we hear a lot about what our members are reading. Sometimes they love them, sometimes they hate them but to have a borrower say, “This is the best book I have ever read,” is probably worth noting. This was the feedback provided by one library member when returning Above the Fold by Peter Yeldham. An Australian historical fiction, written with meticulous detail, following the lives of a number of Australians during the tumultuous period of the second World War.   If you love Australiana and historical fiction, reserve your copy of  Above […]

What is marginalia?

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , , , | Comments: 0

For centuries, readers have inscribed books with handwritten marginal notes, or marginalia.   These annotations can serve as ownership indicators, inscriptions, study notes, summaries, or they can facilitate what has been described as social reading in which two or more readers discuss the book’s contents in a margin-based conversation.   Samuel Taylor Coleridge coined the term marginalia to encompass all such annotations, but the practice is as old as the printed book and even older: marginalia have been found in scrolls painstakingly copied down by medieval monks.  Marginalia can serve […]

How do you choose a book?

By: | Tags: , , , , | Comments: 0

Why do some books fly off the shelves while others sit and gather dust? It’s all about the cover. The book cover plays a prominent role in our decision to borrow a book.   A cover or jacket’s ability to catch our eye and draw us in can often make or break a book’s success.  We use book covers to determine the worth of a book, the kind of story that might be told within, and whether or not we should take it seriously and borrow the book from the […]

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , | Comments: 0

Paula Hawkins was born in 1972 and raised in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Around 2009, Hawkins began to write romantic comedy fiction under the name Amy Silver, writing four novels including Confessions of a Reluctant Recessionista. She did not achieve any commercial breakthrough until she challenged herself to write a darker, more serious story. Her best-selling novel The Girl on the Train (2015), was a complex thriller, with themes of domestic violence, alcohol, and drug abuse. The novel took her six months, writing full-time, to complete, at a time when she was in a […]
